Cysts, Lipomas and Abscesses Removal

Epidermal Cysts

These are non-cancerous, slow-growing lumps under the skin, typically filled with keratin. They can occur on the face, neck, or back and are often removed if they become inflamed, infected, or bothersome.

Lipomas

Lipomas are soft, fatty lumps that grow under the skin. While usually harmless, they can become uncomfortable if they grow large. Removal is done through a simple procedure with minimal downtime.

Abscesses

An abscess is a painful, swollen area filled with pus, usually caused by infection. Draining and removing the abscess through a minor procedure is often necessary to relieve pain and prevent further infection.

Who Cannot Have Minor Surgery for Epidermal Cysts, Lipomas, and Abscesses?

Active Infections: Patients with active infections in the affected area may not be suitable for surgery until the infection is resolved.

Large Cysts, Lipomas, or Abscesses: We cannot treat cysts, lipomas, or abscesses larger than 1cm in diameter. For larger growths, alternative treatment options may be discussed with our medical practitioners and may require a referral.

Individuals with Severe Health Conditions: Chronic or severe health conditions (e.g., uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or immune system disorders) may affect healing and make surgery risky.

Poor Wound Healing: Those with poor wound healing, such as individuals with a history of keloid scarring or significant scarring, may not be suitable for this procedure.

Blood-Clotting Disorders: Patients with blood-clotting disorders or those on medications that affect blood clotting (e.g., blood thinners) may need to avoid this procedure or consult their physician for alternative treatments.

Pregnancy or Breastfeeding: We do not perform elective surgery on pregnant or breastfeeding individuals due to potential risks to the baby.

Allergies to Anesthesia: If you have an allergy to local anesthesia or any component used in the procedure, this may contraindicate treatment.

What to Expect

The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia to ensure comfort.

  • Minimal downtime with most patients able to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.
  • Small, discreet incisions are made to remove the cyst, lipoma, or abscess, leaving minimal scarring.

For any of these conditions, Dermathetics provides a professional, minimally invasive treatment to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results. Book your consultation today

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the maximum size of a cyst, lipoma, or abscess you can treat?

Dermathetics can treat cysts, lipomas, or abscesses up to 1cm in diameter. Anything larger may require a referral.

What is the difference between an epidermal cyst, lipoma, and abscess?

  • Epidermal Cysts are non-cancerous, slow-growing lumps filled with keratin, often located on the skin’s surface.
  • Lipomas are benign fatty growths that form under the skin. They are usually soft and movable.
  • Abscesses are swollen, painful areas filled with pus, often caused by an infection.

Is the procedure painful?

The procedure is typically done under local anaesthesia, so you will be numb in the treated area, ensuring that you feel little to no pain during the surgery. Any discomfort after the procedure is usually mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

How long does the surgery take?

The procedure generally takes between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and location of the cyst, lipoma, or abscess.

Will there be any scarring?

Minimal scarring is possible, but our practitioners make small incisions to keep scars discreet. Over time, scars usually fade significantly.

How long is the recovery period?

Recovery time is short, with most patients returning to normal activities within a few days. Swelling or minor discomfort may last for a few days, but this can be managed effectively.

Are there any risks involved with this surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, there are small risks, such as infection, bleeding, or scarring. However, these risks are rare, especially with our experienced medical practitioners.

How long does it take to heal after the procedure?

Most patients experience initial healing within 1-2 weeks. Full recovery and scar healing may take a few months, depending on individual factors.

Can the cyst or lipoma come back after removal?

Once removed, epidermal cysts and lipomas typically do not return. However, if a cyst or lipoma is not fully excised, there is a slight chance of recurrence.

Do I need to follow any aftercare instructions?

After surgery, it’s important to keep the treated area clean and dry. You may be given specific aftercare instructions, including avoiding strenuous activities for a short period to ensure optimal healing.
